Sercotel Lido Information

General Information

Since the Sercotel Lido Hotel is in Central Havana, near the Prado and La Habana Vieja, it could hardly be more centrally located. It is not in one of the poshest Cuban streets. In fact many of the buildings are quite literally falling down around you; so it is best to walk in the middle of the road. A stark reminder of the consequences of the internationally recognised "illegal" US embargo and sanctions against Cuba. However for many this just adds to the interest and charm of the place. Hotel Sercotel Lido is the place to be, to experience buzzing street life like nowhere else on the planet, while surrounded by street after street of still magnificent Spanish colonial architecture. In every direction and in every moment there is a new unmissable photo opportunity. This is now the best place to be based for Classic American Car lovers, with a non-stop-feast driving past the front door. And just 2 blocks up is Neptuno Street. This is new hub many classic car "Collective Taxi" routes. Maybe the above, (and its low price), is why it is one of our most popular hotels. The Islazul Hotel Lido has 65 air-conditioned rooms, all with private bath (cold water only) and telephone, TV, grill, snack bar, cafeteria, currency exchange, safety deposit box and taxi service. Has a pleasant terrace that stays open late into the night. Fifth floor rooftop bar has a fascinating view of Havana. (Until late 2004 the Hotel Islazul Lido was known as Hotel Horizontes Lido)

I liked the room and the service but I did not have phone service and one of the front desk worker was very upset when I used the guest phone shortly, even though I was offered that at the beginning by very nice people, very nasty lady, on April 28 at night. I also never got the airport transfer, waited 2 hrs. and had to pay for it, $27.

This is only a 2 star Hotel, but it far exceeded my expectation based on the reviews I read. The room / bathroom (204)was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. The Hotel was convenient for the main tourist attractions and although the surroundings are run down it felt safe as was everywhere I went. The breakfast was adequate, I think excellent by Cuban standards, and although it seems hardly used for lunch/dinner, I did have a simple meal (very late lunch) which was excellent VFM. All the staff I interacted with were very friendly/helpful. Downsides were some street noise as no double glazing / soundproofing. Sound echoed if a door banged etc. The tiles were smooth and very slippy when wet. I did not manage to get hot water, even when running the tap for a long time (I took a simple electric element with me as I expected this might be a problem), and the air conditioner was not very effective which might be a problem in very hot weather.

If you do not have much requirements and expectations and you are travelling on budget, Hotel Lido is a good option. For a good price including breakfast, you will get a place to sleep and if you are lucky, also to shower (water not always available or not at all times). It is located in Havana Centro, so in a walking distance to everything important in the city. The surrounding has a good vibe, although it looks like a war zone with its crumbled buildings. Walk in the middle of the street to avoid potential fall of debris. What we really appreciated was that we got a free transport from the airport to the hotel, which was included in the price. On the other hand, that is pretty much the only comfort this hotel offers. Firstly, it is incredibly noisy, you will hear your neighbours breathing. Secondly, if you desire shower, pray hard, because it is absolutely not granted there will be any water available (also to flash your toilet). I was not crazy about the breakfast, except their magnificent fruit juice and coffee, otherwise sandwiches and eggs had a strange understate. However, if you wish to have a good mojito, try the hotel bar, we had an exquisite drink there and for a quick, not complicated dinner, pop-up in the hotel restaurant - you will get either chicken or fish for no price.
