Colonial Cayo Coco

Nice place, nice staff, old colonial building, beautiful beach. We had a great time here...

Stayed here beginning of Feb 2016 having hopped around various places in Cuba staying in fairly cheap accomodation including casa particulares (homestays). We wanted to stay in Cayo Coco and looking at the options in the area decided we were going to have to stay in an all inclusive....having never done so before. We were looking forward to good food, 4 star accomodation and services and various watersports included in the price. The room was substandard. State of disrepair, much like the rest of the hotel. Sheets were not changed during our 6 day stay. Fridge stocked daily with water only. Food. Abysmal. The ethos definately seemed to be quantity over quality. Bland. Often cold. Poor variety over the 6 days. We were unable to book into our "included" 1 night of "a la carte" restaurant as they were always "fully booked". We found the a la carte restaurants (3 on site) closed in the evenings). Watersports. Not "owned" or "run" by the hotel themselves. One of the staff members was particulary rude and on a flat calm day with no waves but clouds just on the horizon said we could not use the kayak or snorkels as they were "closed" due to "bad weather" and we were not allowed out in the sea. I said if I had my own equipment I would happily go out. The response was "well you can sign a form to say you accept responsibility to injury" etc, to which I laughed and asked if they would drag me out of the water if I went in. This was met with a shoulder shrug. I was told I should have bought my own equipment if that was the case.....funny, one of the main reasons we booked the hotel was because he "watersports" and therefore equipment should be provided. Anyway, we eventually got out on the old kayak and a pedalo. We saw groups go out on supervised runs with the catamarans. Wi-fi.....don't bother buying the cards. The internet connectivity is barely existent so you end up running down the credit from the cards you have to purchase ($2 for 1 hour) without actually being able to do anything. We were told "it was the weather" but down the road at Melia Cayo Coco the service worked perfectly well. Entertainment was hit and miss. It relied heavily on the weather and was loud and proud on the sunny days. On the poor weather days when people need a pick me up the activities were non-existent. We were also escorted out of one of the bars in the evening as we were the only people in there (supposedly open until 2am). We wanted to leave after 1 night (2days) but since it was nearing the end of our trip we did not really want to venture anywhere else and the beaches were ok. We just shut up and put up but then found our "service" from the staff was less friendly than that experienced by everyone else. This in part may be due to our English ethos. Our mentality is to tip good service whereas other nationalities tipped regardless and therefore seemed to receive a relatively better service (our interpretation only). In summary we were astounded at the 4 star rating and as our first experience of an all inclusive resort we were thoroughly disappointed and massively out of pocket. The Casa Particulares were much better value for money and friendly.
